    Tymoshenko's Bloc Barred from Ukrainian Elections
    KIEV -- Ukraine's elections commission Saturday refused to register candidates from Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc for next month's parliamentary elections, and supporters of the group erected a tent camp in central Kiev on Sunday to protest. Full Story

    Citizen Journalism in Central Asia: Challenges and Opportunities of the Growing Online Community

    Certain technological innovations have changed the way societies function so fundamentally that they altered the course of history.  Inventions like the printing press, telephones, radio, and computer, to name a few, all ushered in new eras in human history.  The internet is one such innovation, and has already left its mark across the globe. Increasingly people are beginning to publish original reporting online. Central Asia, however, has yet to be substantially impacted by the internet, let alone any form of citizen journalism.

    Dr. Sergei Markov started his presentation by noting that he has been a supporter of President Vladimir Putin. Markov believes that Russia was not democratic during the 1990s but began moving to a right direction under Putin.

  • NGOs, Philanthropy, and the Fate of Russian Democracy
    Dr. Ariel Cohen began the briefing by noting that political pluralism in Russia has shrunk as political parties have been marginalized. In addition, President Vladimir Putin assumed control over the Duma and the media, especially television stations. The print media, which were free until about 2004, are increasingly picked up by rich businessmen. There are discussions in the Russian government to put limits on the Internet.

    The Constitution of Uzbekistan guarantees basic human and civil rights. However, violations of those rights are rampant in the country and the state limits the exercise of most of the rights, including freedom of speech, freedom of association, civil rights, right to defense and freedom from torture and ill treatment.
